Always obtain permission before collecting on private property and confirm the rules for public land. Removing rocks, minerals, fossils, plants, or archaeological objects may be restricted or prohibited in national parks, protected areas, historic sites, and other managed lands.
Collect only where permitted, take modest samples, and avoid damaging formations or habitat. Never enter abandoned mines or unstable excavations. Leave scientifically significant fossils and unusual discoveries in place, photograph their location, and notify the appropriate land manager or local museum.
Safety Note
Wear approved eye protection whenever striking or breaking rock. Use a geology hammer rather than an ordinary household hammer, which may chip or shatter. Keep hands clear of the impact area and never strike rocks toward another person.
