Recover fine gold, flakes and small nuggets with this portable 9.25″ × 27″ aluminum stream sluice. Its fixed flare collects and directs more stream flow into the recovery channel, while the included riffles, angled expanded metal, miner’s moss, carpet and sluice matting provide multiple layers of gold capture.
The compact aluminum construction and included carrying strap make this sluice convenient for creek prospecting, placer sampling and trips into remote gold-bearing locations.
This sluice combines several proven recovery components:
The upper matting provides an initial recovery surface and helps reveal visible gold near the beginning of the sluice.
Carpet slows fine heavy material and creates a textured surface where fine gold and black sand can settle.
Miner’s moss provides additional depth and holding capacity for gold and other dense material.
The angled mesh creates turbulence and multiple protected settling areas above the miner’s moss.
The riffle assembly creates low-pressure recovery zones while holding the expanded metal, miner’s moss and carpet securely against the sluice floor.

Place the flared end upstream and secure the sluice with stable rocks or suitable supports. Level the channel from side to side and adjust its downhill slope until water flows evenly across the recovery system.
Feed a small amount of material and watch the riffles. Lighter sediment should move downstream while black sand and other heavy material settle into the protected recovery zones.
If the riffles remain completely packed with light material, increase the water flow, slightly increase the slope or reduce the feed rate. If material moves through too aggressively, reduce the slope or move the sluice into slower water.
Feed small, controlled amounts of material into the flare. Spread the material across the available water flow instead of piling it in one location.
Removing oversized rocks and completely breaking apart clay can improve material exchange and help prevent the recovery system from becoming overloaded.
Stop feeding material and allow lighter sediment to clear. Carefully lift the sluice from the stream while keeping it level.
Position the sluice over a bucket, tub or gold pan. Loosen the wing nuts and carefully remove the riffle assembly and angled mesh. Rinse the miner’s moss, carpet, sluice matting, mesh and riffles into the cleanup container.
Reinstall the recovery layers in their original order and securely tighten the wing nuts before using the sluice again.
