Product Information

Unlike traditional sluice boxes, the fluid bed sluice does not use a set of riffles, matting, or

Green Mountain Gold Trap 16″ Pack Rat EZ-Cleanout Fluid-Bed Gold Trap

Quickly sample promising locations and identify productive pay streaks with the compact Green Mountain Gold Trap 16″ Pack Rat. Unlike a conventional sluice, the Pack Rat uses a fluidized capture bed rather than carpet, matting, expanded metal or traditional riffles.

Its transparent polycarbonate construction allows you to watch the capture tray operate in real time. This visible feedback makes it easier to adjust the water flow, slope and feed rate until the material inside the tray remains properly fluidized.

Best of all, the patented removable capture tray provides a fast cleanup without requiring you to lift and reposition the entire gold trap.

How the Fluid-Bed System Works

Water entering the Pack Rat creates an active bed of water, sand and small gravel inside the capture tray. As material passes through the unit, the fluidized bed allows lighter material to exchange and move out while dense material—including gold and other heavies—settles into the trap.

The Pack Rat does not require conventional riffles, carpet or recovery matting. Correct water flow, setup and feed rate are essential to maintaining an active capture bed and retaining gold.

Clear Construction for Visible Adjustment

The clear polycarbonate body lets you see what is happening inside the capture chamber. Instead of guessing whether the trap is operating correctly, you can observe the material exchange and adjust the unit as necessary.

This visible operation is the basis of Green Mountain Gold Trap’s “Clear = Confidence” approach.

Patented EZ-Cleanout Capture Tray

Traditional fluid-bed systems often require removing the entire unit from the stream for cleanup. The Pack Rat uses Green Mountain Gold Trap’s patented removable capture-tray design.

Block the water flowing across the skid plate, remove the locking pin and slide out the tray. The main body can remain positioned in the stream, saving the time required to completely reset the unit after every inspection or cleanup.

Important Capacity Information

The 16″ Pack Rat is intended primarily for sampling, portability and easy setup. It is not Green Mountain Gold Trap’s high-volume production model.

Continuous operation is possible when the capture bed remains properly active, but its compact dimensions limit the amount of material it can process compared with the 23″ Pay Streak Finder and 3-foot River Bed Hog.

Basic Setup and Operation

Place the Pack Rat in flowing water with the intake facing upstream. Secure it so the body remains level from side to side, then adjust the slope and water exposure until the material inside the capture tray becomes fluidized.

Feed small amounts of material while watching the transparent chamber. The capture bed should remain active and exchange lighter material without becoming tightly packed.

If the tray packs solid, reduce the feed rate or adjust the water flow and positioning. Do not continue feeding material when the capture bed is inactive.

EZ-Cleanout Procedure

Before removing the capture tray, block the water flowing across the skid plate. The manufacturer states that blocking the scoop plate is unnecessary.

Remove the locking pin, carefully slide out the capture tray and rinse its contents into a bucket or gold pan. Reinstall the tray and locking pin, restore the water flow and confirm that the bed is operating correctly before resuming the feed.

carpet to capture gold. Instead, they use a fluid bed of water, sand, and small pebbles in a collection tray that is cast into the sluice to trap gold.

This version of a fluid bed sluice is a step above the rest.  Constructed of clear polycarbonate (the same stuff bullet proof glass is made of), this stuff is virtually indestructible.  Unlike most fluid bed sluices where you have to remove the entire box from the stream, the  EZ Cleanout Pay Streak Finder has a patented Removable Capture Tray which allows for a very quick clean out. It also eliminates the need to lift the whole unit out of the water, saving valuable time re-setting up. Superb fluid dynamics throughout the entire Capture Tray means that it can and will sink the gold.  And, with the proper set up and feed rate, it will stay there.

Fine tuned to capture fine flour gold down to -300 microns.  You won't miss a fleck of gold if your box is tuned in right. The creator of this sluice has coined the term, "Clear = Confidence."  By having a clear sluice you can actually see what is going on inside the sluice box.  This allows you to adjust the box to get the perfect internal operation and fine tune it for optimal performance.

The Paystreak Finder is portable and perfect for packing in while prospecting for producing gold paystreaks.  For higher volume stream applications Check out the 23" or 3' sizes of the River Bed Hog Fluid Bed Sluice
