Pack light and recover fine placer gold with the compact Columbia River Gold Getter Drop-Riffle Stream Sluice. Measuring only 22 inches overall, this backpack-friendly sluice is easy to carry, position and clean.
The flared entrance helps gather and distribute stream flow into the five-inch-wide recovery channel. Molded drop riffles create protected low-pressure areas where dense gold can settle while lighter sand and gravel continue downstream.
Unlike a traditional sluice that relies on carpet, expanded metal and a removable riffle cage, the Gold Getter uses drop-riffle pockets formed directly into its recovery surface.
Water flows over each opening while dense material drops into the protected cavities below the main current. This simple design captures fine gold while eliminating layered recovery media and complicated hardware.

Position the sluice with its flared entrance facing upstream. Use stable rocks or other suitable supports to hold the unit firmly in place and level it from side to side.
Adjust the slope and water exposure until water flows evenly through the five-inch channel. Begin with a small amount of material and observe how quickly lighter sediment clears from the drop riffles.
If the riffle cavities remain packed with light material, increase the water flow, slightly increase the slope or reduce the feed rate. If material races through too aggressively, decrease the slope or move the sluice into slightly slower water.
Feed small, controlled amounts of material into the flare. Spread the material across the available flow instead of piling it in one location.
Removing oversized rocks and breaking apart clay before feeding will help maintain consistent water flow and reduce clogging. Do not overwhelm the narrow recovery channel with material faster than it can clear.
Stop feeding material and allow lighter sediment to wash through. Carefully lift the sluice from the stream while keeping it level.
Place the lower end over a bucket, tub or gold pan and rinse the contents of the drop riffles into the container. No carpet, riffle cage or expanded metal must be removed.
Drop Riffle Sluices are known to capture high percentages of gold, especially the small stuff that other sluices might miss. This handy backpacker size stream sluice is one that is used in a stream.
