Choosing the Right Headphones for Your XP Deus Metal Detector: Backphones vs. Full-Size Headphones

As someone who talks treasure hunting, metal detecting, and relic hunting daily, one of the most common questions I get about the XP Deus metal detector is: "Which headphones should I use—backphones or full-size headphones?"

Let me start by saying that many people don’t enjoy wearing headphones while detecting, but in most cases, headphones are crucial for hearing faint, deep signals. Both styles have their pros and cons, and your choice depends largely on your preferences, detecting environment, and the weather.

Backphones: Lightweight and Minimalist

The backphones are lightweight, with a slim plastic band that fits across the back of your head or neck. They lightly cover the ears without fully enclosing them, which has both advantages and disadvantages:

Pros:

  • Comfortable Fit: The backphones don’t fit too tightly and are more comfortable for most users, especially during long hunts.
  • Lightweight Design: Ideal for warmer weather when full-size headphones might feel too hot and sticky.
  • Awareness of Surroundings: Since they don’t fully cover your ears, you can hear some ambient noise, making them a good choice if you’re worried about being aware of your surroundings.
  • Compatibility with Full-Brim Hats: They work well with wide-brim hats, commonly worn for sun protection during summer.

Cons:

  • Noise Isolation: Backphones provide minimal noise reduction, which can be a disadvantage in windy or noisy environments.
  • Cold Weather Use: They don’t provide any warmth, and wearing them with a stocking hat can be awkward unless the hat is large enough to fit over the headphones.
  • Fit: The lighter grip may not feel secure enough for some users.

Full-Size Headphones: Superior Sound Isolation

Full-size headphones completely enclose the ears, wrapping around your head, top cheeks, and neck. They’re the more traditional option for detectorists who prioritize sound clarity.

Pros:

  • Noise Isolation: Full-size headphones excel in windy conditions by blocking out external noise, helping you hear faint, deep signals clearly.
  • Cold Weather Comfort: They keep your face and ears warm, which can be a significant advantage during winter hunts.
  • Sound Quality: With full coverage, they provide a richer and clearer sound experience, which is especially useful for identifying subtle target tones.

Cons:

  • Weight and Heat: They can feel heavy and hot during summer months, especially in humid climates.
  • Limited Awareness: Fully enclosed ears mean you’re less aware of your surroundings, which might be a concern if you’re detecting in an area where you need to stay alert.
  • Not Hat-Friendly: They don’t work well with wide-brim hats and can feel cumbersome with certain headgear.

It's A Situational Choice

Here’s how I decide which headphones to use:

  • Hot Summer Days: I prefer backphones for their lightweight and breathable design. They’re less likely to make me overheat, and I can remain aware of my surroundings.
  • Cold, Windy Conditions: Full-size headphones are my go-to. They block out noise and keep my ears warm, allowing me to focus on faint signals even in challenging weather.
  • Awareness Needs: When I’m detecting in public areas or places where I need to stay alert, I might use backphones or wear full-size headphones with one ear slightly uncovered.

Final Thoughts

Your choice between backphones and full-size headphones comes down to personal preference and detecting conditions. If you prioritize comfort and situational awareness, backphones are likely your best bet. However, if you want superior sound quality and noise isolation, full-size headphones are hard to beat.
